Is Dancing Good For You? The Answer Might Surprise you.

Is Dancing Good for you?

Show off Your Dancing Skills at Firefly on Latin Night

Dancing is a pretty old pastime. The origins of ballet can be traced to the Italian Renaissance courts of the 15th century. The first records of any dancing are from India and Egypt dating back to 3300 BC. Now, we know dancing can be fun and entertaining but is dancing good for you? The answer is YES, so let’s break down why.

It Burns Calories

Dancing can burn up to 600 calories an hour according to a study out of the University of Brighton. Unlike traditional running or swimming, you’re less likely to get bored doing it. Over the last few years classes like Zumba have taken off and people of all ages gather together to dance their hearts out while keeping their body strong.

It Improves Mental Health

If you’ve ever taken a dance class, you know that it involves thought. Even group dance classes where you follow along take some brainpower. That’s why dancing has been linked to a reduced risk of dementia as stated by the New England Journal of medicine. Time to get footloose and fancy-free all the way into your 80s and 90s.

It Reduces Stress

Stress is linked to dozens of diseases, but more than that- stress is, well, stressful. Something as simple as dancing around your room, dancing with a partner or even getting down with your friends at a bar can help elevate your mood and reduce stress. The European Journal of Sport Science’s study revealed that dance can elicit changes in mood.

Ok, now you know dancing can be enjoyable and healthy, so which of your favorite dance moves will you be showcasing to your friends? Robot anyone…?

If you’re looking for a place to showcase some of your skills try checking out our Latin night every Friday night starting at 10:30 PM. We have drink specials and dance lessons on our patio.
